Moving Image - GIF master class with photographer Vika Eksta
The two-day creative workshop with photo artist Vika Eksta is intended for young art enthusiasts,
especially those who are interested in photography and media art. During the workshop young
people will have the opportunity to test their creative talents in animating photography in the
currently popular GIF format. Participants will acquire a theoretical and practical overview of the
history, styles and process of making animated images and photography, with particular attention
devoted to the creation of narrative with the help of a moving image. The final part of the workshop
will provide the opportunity to create individual moving images and learn about the technical
formats for exhibiting such works in real as well as virtual space. The workshop will also offer a
chance to learn much that is new about the history of photography and current trends in
contemporary art.
Photographer and photo artist Vika Eksta began experimenting with animated photography in 2015,
intensively researching, creating and exhibiting such images ever since. Animated photography
made in GIF has entered the world of art over the last few years and increasingly regularly appears in
exhibitions of visual art in different countries. Vika Eksta has exhibited her animated photographs in
exhibition spaces (Riga Art Space during the Riga Photography Biennial, at the Circulations Festival in
Paris, Biennale Fashion and Style Photography in Moscow) and she has also created a large online
exhibition Snakes and Ladders in collaboration with curator Paola Paleari, Riga Photography Biennial
(the exhibition can be viewed online: http://www.anmgallery.com/snakes-and- ladders/).
