This exhibition features work by ten artists which has been removed from their Instagram accounts for violating the rules of the social networking platform set by the company itself. Some are seemingly amusing cases when Instagram’s algorithm has mistaken a flower or baby bump for something too inappropriate to be seen by its roughly one billion active users. Others are intimate works by female artists or members of the LGBTQ community exploring their sexuality, close-ups of parenthood, documentation of historical events, and, of course, the scandalous female nipple. This journey through forbidden images invites us to reflect on issues of censorship, visibility, inequality, and the visual homogeneity of the digital environment enforced by the multinational corporations which largely shape our everyday visual experiences, while trading our time for their profit.
